Protect Your Home From Embers…
People and communities who live near bush or grassland areas need to be aware of the year-round potential fire hazard that exists in their area.
Your home could be at risk through direct fire contact or an ember attack and are urged to take the necessary precautions to preserve life.
Although many people living in fire-prone areas already take some necessary precautions, many, however, fail to recognise the danger represented by organic matter build-up, failing to clear the land surrounding their home and ensuring that gutters and roof valleys are kept clean at all times from debris such as leaves and twigs.
Have a Bushfire Protection Plan…
The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends that all households have a Home Fire Safety Plan.
The plan briefly states some precautionary measures that homeowners can take to reduce their risk of fire around the home. Some of the simple steps that homeowners and families can take are:
- Always have a fire alarm installed in your home, change their batteries and test them regularly.
- Keep the land around your home clean at all times, keep grass well cut as grass fires ignite easily and spread very quickly.
- Trim trees around your home and if you live in a bushfire prone area remove trees that represent a fire-risk to your home in a bushfire.
- Keep windows closed in a bushfire to prevent embers from entering your home and igniting the home from within.
Install metal mesh gutter guards. - Have hoses long enough to extend to the extremities of your property, recognise the value of water resources around your home such as water tanks, pools, dams etc.
Understand the Risks…
Understanding bushfires, their threat to personal property and life is imperative to keeping yourself and the ones you love as well as other members of your community safe.
There are (3) main causes of ignition which can ignite buildings, they are by ember attack, direct exposure to flame or radiant heat. Below briefly describes these risks;
- Radiant heat is one of the principal causes of loss of life in bushfires, it rarely is responsible for the loss of property, radiant heat from surrounding bushfires means that buildings themselves don’t necessarily catch alight.
- Ember attack is primarily responsible for building loss during bushfires. Embers can be carried by the wind and can arrive an hour or more before the fire arrives. Embers can enter through open windows, ignite surrounding grass or start small scrub fires that can engulf a building if the home is unoccupied at the time.
- Direct contact with a fire. Often when fire approaches, embers and radiant heat are at their maximum. Grass and plants around the home can ignite. Embers can enter through open windows and gutters can ignite when filled with leaves and twigs.
How Can I Reduce the Risks?…
Leaf Stopper Gutter Guard is CSIRO tested and certified with a Fire Rating Flame Index “0”, it complies to the CSIRO’s rigorous testing standard AS3959-2018 & the NCC 2019 Vol 1 C1.9 & NCC 2022 Vol 1 C2D10, the Australian standard which seeks to protect combustible homes with a fireproof facade.
Installing a Leaf Stopper gutter guard system can provide an additional layer of protection in an ember attack scenario, whereby burning embers carried by the wind can come to rest in the land surrounding your home, roof valleys or gutters. Rest assured that it complies with Australian Fire Safety Standards.
