Having clean gutters is often harder than it sounds.
It is a common misconception that you never have to clean your gutters after installing gutter guards. Even the very best gutter guard systems still require occasional maintenance — however, a quality system can significantly reduce how often cleaning is required.
Over time, debris can build up inside gutters and should be flushed out. It’s a simple task, but if neglected, it can lead to overflowing gutters, water damage, and pest problems around your home.
Ignoring gutter maintenance can lead to costly issues over time. Learn more about the risks in our guide on how proper gutter care helps protect your home.
There are many different types of gutter protection systems available. Generally, they fall into two main categories:
- Insertion systems — installed inside the gutter
- Ski-slope systems — installed from the roof edge to the gutter lip
Within these categories, different materials and installation methods are used depending on the roof type and environment.
If you're still deciding which system is right for your home, our article on different gutter protection systems explains how to choose the best option.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Gutters With Gutter Guards
When cleaning gutters, you should have the following equipment:
- Ladder
- Rope or ladder stabiliser
- Garden gloves
- Safety glasses
- Bucket
- Garden hose with pistol-grip nozzle or pressure cleaner
Step 1 — Secure the Ladder
Set up the ladder and safely secure it at the base, or have someone hold it while you clean. Always inspect that the ladder is stable and in good condition before climbing.
Step 2 — Wear Protective Gear
Put on safety glasses and garden gloves to protect yourself from dirt, debris, and pests. Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear when working at height.
Step 3 — Maintain Safe Positioning
Climb the ladder carefully and bring the bucket up with you. Maintain three points of contact with the ladder at all times.
Step 4 — Remove Surface Debris
Use the bucket to remove leaves and debris from on top of and around the gutter guard.
Step 5 — Flush the Gutters
Rinse out the gutters using a hose or pressure cleaner. This helps remove fine debris that may have passed through the mesh.
Some gutter guard systems require removal during cleaning. Others — particularly properly installed aluminium mesh systems — allow you to flush debris through the mesh without removing the guard.
If you have installed Leaf Stopper, you typically do not need to remove the gutter guard. Simply use water pressure to flush the gutters through the mesh.
For easier maintenance, many homeowners install an access point such as the EasyAC gutter access panel, which allows you to rinse gutters without disturbing the gutter guard system.
EasyAC Gutter Access Panel Options
The EasyAC system makes routine gutter maintenance faster and safer.
- EasyAC Original — reliable access panel for efficient gutter cleaning
- EasyAC 20 — larger aluminium panel available in multiple colours for added durability and flexibility
Both options are designed to simplify maintenance while helping preserve the performance of your gutter protection system.
Step 6 — Reattach or Close the Access Panel
Reattach the gutter guard if it was removed, or close the EasyAC panel after cleaning.
Step 7 — Check Downpipes
Ensure downpipes are clear and carrying water away from the home effectively. Blocked downpipes are a common cause of overflowing gutters.
If your home is two or more storeys high, consider hiring a professional gutter cleaning service. Working at height can be dangerous without proper equipment.
